The Space Graveyard and Second Moon

We are hearing hundreds of space shuttle launches every year of which some become failures and as most are using non-reusable spacecraft there will be debris everywhere. Have you wondered where all these are getting dumped? The Point Nemo and its distance from the nearest landmass There is a place known as spacecraft cemetery, which lies the east of New Zealand in the southern pacific ocean. It is known formally as the South Pacific Ocean Uninhabited Area. The area is central to  Point Nemo  the location furthest from any land. This isolated spot in the ocean is technically called the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility . The cemetery has a total of more than 250 spacecraft resting there. The largest one being the Russian space station MIR or what's left of it. We have seen news that the ISS has increased its orbit due to debris of satellites. Just imagine, The International Space Station which is about the size of a football field crashing down on over your head . This is avoided wi

The Human EYE In Space, Hubble Telescope

Hubble Telescope pic credit: NASA The Hubble telescope, Built in 1990’s is still the most vibrant eye for humans towards the universe. The idea of building a large space telescope had been brought up back in the 1940’s. A paper was published in 1946 at Yale’s University on the advantages of astronomy from space and introduced the idea of large space telescope. It’s to be noted that his idea came up 11 years before the launch of the first ever satellite sputnik 1. However, the first meeting for setting up such a telescope was held in 1974 on behalf of NASA. Edwin Hubble pic credits:NASA In the following year, funds were allotted and in 1978 the primary mirror grinding started. As the Telescope  be placed in space, astronauts had to be trained for fixing any issues and in 1979 NASA started its training procedures. The large telescope was named HUBBLE in honor of the astronomer Edwin Hubble, who proved that there were other galaxies in our universe and that they are moving away fro

The power of the SUN in the palm of Human

Most of you have heard this dialogue from  the famous movie Spiderman 2. Well, guess what we have completed it. The Kstar project(Korean star) has sustained the fusion reaction for 20 seconds. You guys might feel its really small duration but the effort to achieve this took decades of hardwork. KSTAR Reactor pic credits: indiantimes Lot of countries have been into making of an artificial sun due to the increase in demand of the energy and the pollution of earth. Nuclear fusion paves the way to solve these problems. For over  a decade scientists have been working for making it a realization. Two years ago the same was achieved by china for 8 seconds. So, actually what happens in the artificial sun?   In our sun, the source of energy is fusion reaction combining lighter atoms to make a heavier atoms. In Sun hydrogen combine to form helium. For this reaction to take place, The isotopes of hydrogen(deuterium and tritium) is heated to extreme temperatures to change the state to 4 th
